Module 5: Regression Methods: Concepts & Applications

Module 5: Regression Methods: Concepts and Applications

This module will introduce linear regression as a tool for studying relationships between continuous outcomes and continuous, binary, and categorical predictors. Using linear regression as the foundation, we will explore other regression methods, including logistic regression for the analysis of binary outcomes. Specific topics discussed are: linear regression; regression diagnostics; ANOVA; multiple comparisons; logistic regression; generalized linear models. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on experience, using R. This module assumes the material in Module 1 and will cover the basic commands in R. Suggested pairing: Modules 9 and 12.

Rebecca Hubbard is Associate Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on development and application of statistical methods for analyses using electronic health records and claims data. Her work has been applied to studies of cancer screening, aging and dementia, pharmacoepidemiology, and health services research. Her recent publications include “Bayesian latent class approach for EHR-based phenotyping.” Statistics in Medicine 38: 74-87 and “Inclusion of unstructured clinical text improves early prediction of death or prolonged ICU stay.” Critical Care Medicine 46: 1125-1132.

Mary Lou Thompson is Professor of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington and Honorary Professor in the School of Nursing and Public Health at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. She works mainly in the field of observational epidemiology and her research interests are in the areas of diagnostic methods, longitudinal data, aging and cognition. She is a passionate educator with teaching experience in a wide range of settings. Recent publications include “Cognitive trajectory changes over 20 years prior to dementia diagnosis: a large cohort study.” J Am Geriatr Soc 65: 2627-2633 and “Testosterone treatment and the risk of aggressive prostate cancer in men with low testosterone levels.” PLoS One;13(6):e0199194.
